The Service Bell
The
service bell is housed in a bell turret at the west end of the church.
The bell weighs 3 hundredweight (i.e. 336lb or about 153kg) and is two
feet (61cm) in diameter. It is tuned to the note of F sharp and hung
with stock and hammer so that it can be swung or chimed.
The bell is used to announce services, calling the faithful to prayer and is rung approximately five minutes before a service is due to start. It is customary to ring the bell 33 times, representing one chime for each year of Our Lord's life on earth.
